From HRD to Philanthropic Leader: Yanjie’s Sentimental Journey with Shanghai Ensan Youth

In the heart of a bustling metropolis, Guo Yanjie once thrived as a senior white-collar professional, adeptly navigating the corporate world as a Human Resources Director. Yet, a pivotal twist of fate redirected her life's path in a profound way.

Transitioning from a behind-the-scenes strategist to a leading figure in public welfare, Guo Yanjie now stands as a beacon of hope for the disabled. She is the founder and driving force behind the Shanghai Ensan Youth. Her journey from corporate success to championing social causes embodies a remarkable transformation, highlighting her unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

A Chance Encounter, Kindness Awakens

On an ordinary workday, Yanjie, the Human Resources Director, was screening resumes when she unexpectedly encountered a unique group of job seekers: individuals with disabilities. Their eyes conveyed a complex mix of longing for the future and confusion, particularly among those who had become disabled due to accidents. One poignant statement struck her deeply: "Things that were once easy to do have now become extremely difficult." This revelation hit her like a stone dropped into a tranquil lake, sending ripples through her heart.

In that moment, Yanjie realized that everyone faces low points in life, and her role could be to extend a helping hand and illuminate the path for these souls navigating through adversity.

Startup Hardship, the Forging of a Hexagonal Warrior

The journey of founding the Shanghai Ensan Youth was anything but smooth for Yanjie. It was marked by challenges and uncertainties. To truly understand the needs of the disabled community, she became a "hexagon warrior," immersing herself in every aspect of the organization—from policy research and market analysis to institutional registration and daily operations. Yanjie recognized that only by appreciating the diversity and complexity of this group could she develop truly effective aid programs. Along the way, she assembled a team composed of 80% individuals with disabilities, not only acknowledging their capabilities but also honouring their resilience. This team has become Yanjie’s strongest support, reinforcing her belief that every effort she makes holds profound significance.

In Growth, We Build Dreams Together

Yanjie believes that helping people with disabilities integrate into society goes beyond providing material support; it is about offering spiritual companionship and guidance. Through organizing charity events, social practices, and volunteer services, she encourages young individuals with disabilities to break free from their self-imposed isolation and embrace life with courage. One particularly inspiring story involves an intellectually disabled girl who, with Yanjie's support, transformed from a withdrawn and quiet individual into a lively and cheerful participant. She even encouraged her friends to join in. Witnessing such profound changes fills Yanjie with deep gratitude and reinforces her conviction that the power of love and companionship is truly limitless.

Family’s Support: A Legacy of Giving

Yanjie’s philanthropic journey is one she shares with her family, who have become her strongest support system. Her daughter, especially, was inspired by her mother’s charitable work and actively encouraged Yanjie to leverage social media to promote their initiatives. This familial support has not only broadened Yanjie’s reach but also strengthened her commitment to philanthropy. She understands that charity is more than just an action; it is a spiritual legacy. Through her efforts, she hopes to invite more people to join this loving and warm community.

Academic Enlightenment, Empowering with Technology

Yanjie’s time at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy has revitalized her philanthropic journey. There, she gained insights into the intricacies of national policy formulation and recognized the crucial role of technological innovation in the realm of public welfare. This newfound understanding inspired her to explore how technology could enhance services for people with disabilities. For instance, she considered utilizing artificial intelligence to convert spoken words into text, enabling seamless communication for the hearing-impaired. This innovative, cross-disciplinary approach has made her public welfare projects not only more visionary but also more impactful.

Staying True to Our Roots, Steadfast We Advance

Reflecting on her journey, Yanjie acknowledges the challenges and hardships encountered along the path of philanthropy, yet she has never wavered in her commitment. She firmly believes that where there is love in the heart, there is a way forward. Through her actions, she embodies the essence of "never forget your original intention and keep your mission in mind," inspiring fellow alumni and students to engage in charitable work. Yanjie is convinced that by coming together, we can bring more positive energy and warmth to society. Looking ahead, she will continue to work with the team at Shanghai Ensan Youth, striving to create a brighter future for people with disabilities and ensuring that the light of love and responsibility shines in every corner of need.
