The First S R Nathan Fellowship Young Leaders Seminar — Shaping Singapore's Climate Future: Achieving NDCs with the Use of Carbon Markets

Synopsis

Singapore has committed to reduce emissions to between 45 and 50 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2035 after peaking emissions earlier between 2025 and 2028, as part of the country’s revised 2035 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) submitted to the UN on 10 February 2025. This is the first time the nation has announced a downward emissions trajectory, which contributes toward achieving the long-term temperature objective of the Paris Agreement.

As a resource-constrained and alternative energy-disadvantaged city-state, Singapore must rely on international cooperation to help it make up the residual emissions reduction required to realise its climate ambitions. One such means is the use of international carbon markets, aligned with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. This keynote will explore how Singapore’s bilateral cooperation with other countries can help unlock more green growth opportunities for carbon services and trading, and highlight how research can help address challenges such as ensuring environmental integrity and avoidance of double counting.
