Singapore believes that the arts and culture are essential in making Singapore into a “Renaissance City”, attracting knowledge workers and branding the nation. In the last decade and a half, the city-state has indeed made significant strides towards becoming an important centre for the arts in the region. But the process of translating policies into practice has not always been smooth or coherent. The speaker will present his observations from his research, and discuss the boundaries of expressing local social and political issues through art, the status of the arts and culture in Singapore’s creative economy and the search for an “authentic” identity for a “global city for the arts”.Downloads
