At this forum, Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) researchers will share the findings of its Post-Election Survey 2020. The 2020 edition of this survey series features a comparison of data collected across three platforms — landline telephones, mobile phones and the internet.
The presentation will provide a comparison of key items across past post-election surveys of 2011 and 2015 to track changes in political attitudes. For instance, it will examine whether it continues to be the case that those in higher socio-economic classes have a proclivity to support political change in Singapore. This 2020 edition will look at the extent to which the COVID-19 pandemic management mattered vis-à-vis other policy and political issues. A staple of the survey series is to decipher what voters look for in candidates — a significant aspect in this year’s election when key political parties fielded candidates that departed from their past profiles.
After the IPS research team has presented its findings, a small group of scholars will discuss these and share what they feel are other long-term trends in electoral politics and democracy here, in Asia and globally, that must be recognised in trying to anticipate the course of political development in Singapore beyond GE2020.
