TNPS 2022 — Panel Two: Non-Traditional Forms of Cooperation and Cooperatives

Synopsis

The Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) and Tote Board invite you to the second virtual panel discussion of the 2022 Transforming the Non-Profit Sector (TNPS) series.

We will focus on whether worker-owned cooperatives or platform cooperatives are able to generate social mobility and economic inclusion for marginalised communities. Worker-owned cooperatives are jointly owned and democratically controlled business organisations that operate on principles of self-help and mutual assistance. Even digital platforms like food delivery and ride-hailing apps can be democratically controlled by users and workers in the form of platform cooperatives. We will examine the potential of organisational structures that decentralise control while considering the challenges of collective decision-making when there is mass participation.

TNPS is a three-year partnership between IPS and Tote Board that aims to enhance the capabilities of non-profit organisations as well as support public-private-people partnerships. The theme for this year is “Solutions that Help Us Help One Another”, where we will highlight the often-neglected “impulse from the ground” and how non-profits can harness existing assets and consider new ways to help communities help themselves. We will examine how mutual aid, professional help and philanthropic giving can play mutually supportive and complementary roles in the non-profit sector to unlock the hidden potential and untapped capacities of communities.
