Fostering Green Transformations in Asia Lessons from an Environmental Pioneer

Industry has a significant role to play if efforts to address climate change and other contemporary environmental challenges are to have effective outcomes. But, as Heinrich Jessen argues, we cannot rely solely on green innovators and environmental technology pioneers to bring about a meaningful reduction in the impacts industry has on the environment. The vast bulk of global industry is made up of “ordinary” companies that meet “ordinary” needs by providing “ordinary” products. It is only when these “ordinary” businesses change their ways that significant positive change can be achieved.
In this lecture, Heinrich Jessen will discuss the successes but also the challenges faced as he led efforts to green his family business Jebsen & Jessen. What started as a risk mitigation effort to “clean up our own backyard” eventually culminated in Jebsen & Jessen becoming the first industrial group in South East Asia to achieve carbon neutrality.
