Young Singaporeans Conference 2006: "Building a Community of Citizens for the 21st Century"

The IPS Young Singaporeans Conference (YSC) series is a programme designed to gather outstanding young Singaporean leaders, from the public, private and civic sectors between the ages of 25 and 40 to share their considered views on critical issues for public policy in Singapore.

The YSC is also a key channel through which IPS seeks to gather a sense of the values, aspirations and anxieties of this group of people in our country.

Participants have also found it an enriching experience to network among other young leaders outside of their usual spheres of interaction.

This year, our theme is, "Building a Community of Citizens for the 21st Century," with themes that resonate with the Prime Minister's National Day Rally Speech delivered on 20 August 2006. It speaks to the question of how we can develop a sense of rootedness among our citizens, businesses and civil society to this idea of the Singapore nation under the conditions of a globalising world.

We are very excited to be able to present Dr Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Ernest L. Arbuckle Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School as the keynote speaker for YSC 2006. She is well-known within the business community as well as within the government and civic sectors around the world and in Singapore. The theme of the conference has been developed out of Prof Kanter's views in her book entitled: World Class: Thriving Locally in the Global Economy.

The conference ends with an engaging dialogue session with a senior member of the Singapore Government. This year, we have the great privilege of presenting Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister of Community Development, Youth and Sports, as our Guest of Honour at the dialogue session where participants share their reflections from their discussions over their day and a half together at the YSC.
