The National Art Gallery of Singapore (TNAGS), due to open in 2013, is an art gallery that will have a contemporary Southeast Asian focus. The Gallery is envisioned as a civic and creative space established for the enrichment, enjoyment and engagement of Singaporeans and visitors from all over the world, and aims to be accessible to its visitors and users in physical, intellectual, cultural, social and virtual terms.
The Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) is organizing a closed-door discussion on TNAGS and its mission. Mr Kwok Kian Chow, Director of TNAGS, and his colleagues will present a paper outlining TNAGS’ concept of Southeast Asian art and culture, and what that would mean for the museum itself. The paper will also discuss whether Southeast Asian regionalism in art can be advanced through TNAGS, and how TNAGS – and Singapore – can advance the idea in the cultural sphere. Internationalism as a global trend in museums will also be covered. We have also lined up two discussants, Assoc Prof Goh Beng Lan and Dr Charles Merewether to lead the discussion after Mr Kwok’s presentation.
The discussion forms an important part of TNAGS’s ongoing consultation with artists, scholars and the public to help refine the museum’s mission.
