This high-level roundtable will examine the key facets vital to fostering high-integrity carbon markets from a public policy perspective while highlighting the collaborative roles played by key stakeholders in the carbon services and trading ecosystem. With the presence of the UN Assistant Secretary-General, Mr. Marcos Neto, during his visit to Singapore, the event is set to provide deep insights into how these markets can assist nations in fulfilling their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), while ensuring social, environmental safeguards, and fostering sustainable development.
Organized by the UNDP Global Centre for Technology, Innovation and Sustainable Development in Singapore in collaboration with the Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP), this roundtable will convene experts from government, international organizations, private sector, and academia, to deliberate on the significance of carbon markets in global climate action.
The discussions will explore the complexities of developing high-integrity carbon markets such as designing robust governance frameworks, tackling technical and socio-economic challenges, examining how carbon markets can be complemented with carbon pricing and wider climate finance initiatives. The roundtable will also emphasize Singapore's pivotal role as a carbon services and trading hub, focusing on the complementary roles of various public and private actors in ensuring market integrity.
