After 30 years of growing recognition by scholars of the need to integrate research crucial for designing durable and effective policy solutions, the challenge remains that this knowledge is often disconnected and fragmented. These disconnects are found among policy subdisciplines, as well as between the policy sciences and knowledge communities including science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and others. We will examine the following key questions at this Leadership Roundtable:
a) How can policy design capacity building help integrate the policy sciences and connect with STEM and other communities to generate durable and effective climate policy solutions for desired outcomes?
b) How can philanthropic foundations in combination with government, private sector, international organizations, academia, research institutes, and other entities be coordinated and leveraged to support policy design capacity building toward accelerating climate action like decarbonizing the economy in Southeast Asia?
The discussion will examine key facets to fostering integration across disciplines and sectors from a public policy perspective, focusing on urgent climate action like building energy regional connectivity (ASEAN Power Grid) and generating sufficient political support, climate finance, and other factors. We will highlight collaborative roles played by key stakeholders in examining how to deliver policy design capacity building toward these objectives. We will consider disconnects between sectors of the economy and knowledge communities, while exploring the questions:
a) How to channel support and finance to the most promising decarbonization efforts?
b) How to determine what are the most promising decarbonization efforts to pursue given limited time and resources?
Organized by the Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP), with support from The Rockefeller Foundation, this roundtable will convene cross-sectoral experts, officials, and practitioners to deliberate on these important climate, environment, and sustainability issues facing our world.
