As a small city-state with no natural resources, it is often said that Singapore’s only resource is its people. The 2023 Global Talent Competitive Index highlighted Singapore’s workforce as among the world’s most proficient in terms of management, vocational and technical skills. However, the work landscape is constantly evolving. While financial stability remains vital, Generation Zs and millennials emphasise purpose and are unafraid to turn down work based on their beliefs. The COVID-19 pandemic cast a spotlight on remote and hybrid arrangements, setting a new standard where regular office attendance is the exception rather than the norm. This has impacted hiring and retention. At the same time, technology is changing the skills required for various roles.
In the midst of all this, how can Singapore cement its position as a global hub for talent? How can workers maintain or build their competitive edge to continue securing rewarding jobs that offer both fulfilment and financial security? At the organisational level, what can businesses do to create better working conditions and ensure the wellbeing of their employees?
