ADB's Work on Governance & Public Sector Management: Emergent Areas for Closer Focus

ADB’s portfolio of investments in the area of governance and public sector management amounts to US$2.62 billion for 2016, accounting for almost one-eighth of the total investments of ADB. 80% of all ADB operations are also tagged with the Governance and Capacity Development theme. Governance, thus, occupies a central place in ADB’s work in the Asia Pacific Region. Looking to the immediate future, we see the following issues, among others, dominating our attention: (a) role of local governance in service delivery; (b) primacy of corporate and e-governance; (c) focus on domestic resource mobilization, including issues of tax enhancement and curtailing tax avoidance; and (d) reforms of SOEs. There is scope for strong collaboration between ADB and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in being engaged in these areas in support of the work of the countries of Asia and the Pacific.
