Drew Thompson discusses growing China-Taiwan tensions on the Liberated Panda
23 May 2021
Visiting Senior Research Fellow Drew Thompson speaks to Angel Tang at the Liberated Panda.
They discuss how the conflict will be resolved in the South China Sea with respect to China's frequent boundary aggression. They also take in depth look at the relationship between the United States, China and Taiwan, including how Drew most likely sees the conflict resolving between China and Taiwan and how America is likely to react in the face of potential Chinese hostility should China decide to take back Taiwan by force.
Then Angel and Drew talk about Taiwan and the concept of "strategic ambiguity" and whether America is better off discarding or keeping this policy as it pertains to Taiwan. In addition, they discuss China's People Liberation Army's ("PLA") defense budget under Xi Jinping and China's relative strength of its military compared to America.
Finally, Angel and Drew talk about the possibility of a hot war with China and or cyber warfare's role in replacing traditional warfare and whether the United States is ready for this type of conflict.
