Nearly three years after the first official announcement of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) in October 2023, it is timely to assess whether its ambition to leverage the complementary strengths of Johor and Singapore and strengthen their joint value proposition for attracting global investment has begun to translate into observable changes in investment patterns.
In this webinar, we review the key policy initiatives underpinning the JS-SEZ and examine recent investment patterns in Johor and across other Malaysian states using Orbis Global and Orbis Crossborder Investment data. In particular, we examine investments into different Malaysian states by global investors with corporate linkages through Singapore, offering new evidence on how the Johor-Singapore nexus is positioned as a platform for attracting and channelling international investment.
We then assess the impact of the JS-SEZ announcement on greenfield FDI, examining potential spillovers to neighbouring states and differences between promoted and non-promoted sectors, as well as between high-tech and non-high-tech activities. The webinar will provide policymakers and businesses with an evidence-based assessment of where the effects of the JS-SEZ appear strongest and what the emerging investment landscape may imply for future opportunities.
