Can Asia-Pacific Deliver on the RCEP Promise?

The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), dubbed as a "game-changer" for regional trade, has created the world’s largest free trade area by encompassing 15 dynamic Asia-Pacific economies. Covering nearly a third of global GDP, trade volume, and population, RCEP has promised to revolutionise trade dynamics by consolidating the fragmented ASEAN+1 free trade agreements (FTA) and harmonising trade rules, tariffs, and market access across the region.

Since entering into force in January 2022, RCEP aims not only to simplify trade across the Asia-Pacific but also to bridge the gap in bilateral FTAs between Japan and the two other significant economies in Northeast Asia, China and South Korea. However, with growing global economic uncertainties and more applicants lining up, the crucial question arises: Can RCEP truly live up to the growing expectations?

This webinar brings together leading experts to explore critical provisions of RCEP, such as tariff liberalisation, rules of origin, and market access through a comparative analysis of RCEP and pre-existing ASEAN+1 FTAs. Additionally, our experts will discuss emerging trends, economic implications for member nations, and the strategic challenges and opportunities facing RCEP’s continued expansion, implementation, and future enhancements. Participants will also gain insights into new opportunities and challenges that businesses may encounter as RCEP progresses. Join us for an in-depth exploration of RCEP’s realities, potentials, and future pathways as we assess whether it can indeed reshape trade and investment flows in the Asia-Pacific region.
