P1_121118This Month @ IPS

IPS’ 30th anniversary dinner and conference featured prominent figures, including DPM Tharman Shanmugaratnam, IPS founding patron ESM Goh Chok Tong, cabinet ministers, IPS Special Adviser Prof Tommy Koh and Prof Cherian George. Topics discussed included structural inequality, minimum wage, and racial and religious diversity. The discussion continued post-conference, fuelled by extensive local media coverage and intense social media exchanges.

Prof. Tan Tai Yong delivered his second lecture as IPS’ 6th S R Nathan Fellow for the Study of Singapore. He considers the context within which Singapore "became" a Global City, the pre-existing regional networks, commercial and cultural, that connected Singapore to the world, and the people who were part of Singapore’s cosmopolitan past.

This report by IPS reflects on the implementation and impact of the CJ, specifically the extent to which it fulfils the five key principles of deliberation — inclusivity and diversity, fairness and equality, knowledge gain, efficacy (internal, external and political trust), and applicability.

The Asia Journalism Forum 2018 looked at power shifts in journalism and the media industry due to digitalisation and increasing political polarisation, and raised important questions on how these developments affect governance, public opinion and community building.
