The rising cost of water: Assessing water affordability around the world

The need for improved and continuous provision of water supply and wastewater services has exerted mounting pressures on water and wastewater supply systems. These systems, which are administered by public, municipal, private and public-private utilities, face many challenges, including aging infrastructure, network losses, and high energy consumption costs. These various challenges often increase the water tariffs, fees, and rates that consumers pay year over year. This seminar covers the affordability of water and wastewater services in 151 upper-middle and high-income countries through datasets provided by the Statistics & Economics Specialist Group of the International Water Association (IWA) for the period 2015-2021.
