The Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) is a unit of the World Bank Group (comprising the World Bank, International Finance Corporation or IFC, and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency or MIGA) with a mandate to apply impartial, evidence-based evaluation to influence the WBG’s ability to achieve development outcomes globally and with its partner countries. IEG’s independence is underlined by reporting directly to the Board of Executive Directors for fostering WBG accountability, contributing to learning, and supporting evaluation capacity development globally. IEG’s evaluative effort is focused on outcomes, countries, clients and beneficiaries with increased attention to issues of governance, equality, and inclusion around the world. IEG’s evaluations are organized in line with WBG’s strategic areas which can be grouped as Fragility, Conflict, and Violence (FCV); Mobilizing Finance for Development (MFD); Jobs, Growth & Shared Prosperity; and Climate Change & Environmental Sustainability. Under the last category, IEG has in recent years, conducted major evaluations in the fields of Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM), Water Supply and Sanitation (WSS), and Irrigation Service Delivery. These evaluations maintain a line of sight to the SDGs, and cover issues of policy & regulation, institutional development, capacity building, financial sustainability, private sector participation and the triad of social, environmental, and economic outcomes. This presentation will cover the mandate, organization, and evaluation approach of IEG, followed by highlights from the findings and recommendations of the selected IEG evaluations, with a focus on outcomes and their sustainability.
