Safeguarding ASEAN's Solar PV Future: Trade, Policy, and Business Perspectives

Global commitments to sustainable development have accelerated the adoption of renewable energy, with solar photovoltaic (PV) emerging as one of the most widely deployed technologies. ASEAN has capitalised on the trend and emerged as a major exporter of solar PV cells or modules in the world. However, the region’s heavy reliance on the US as its export market and China as its major supplier of key inputs exposes it to heightened vulnerability amid the intensifying US–China strategic rivalry.

This webinar aims to examine ASEAN’s role in the global solar PV industry and explore the region’s responses to the challenges that have emerged from great power rivalry to safeguard its solar PV future. We will feature presentations by ACI researchers and regional experts. ACI will present an in-depth examination of the role of ASEAN economies in the global solar PV supply chain, highlighting their strengths and vulnerabilities, and offering recommendations for future development. Our guest speakers will discuss the impact of recent US trade measures on the solar PV industry, from the perspective of investment, manufacturing, and power generation costs, and share insights into how ASEAN’s businesses and policymakers are navigating these changes.
