Climate Impacts on Human Health and Health Care

Extreme weather events and air pollution pose significant threats to human well-being worldwide. Rising temperatures can increase heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke; changes in precipitation patterns can lead to more severe floods, compromising sanitation infrastructure and spreading waterborne diseases; poor air quality can exacerbate respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. Apart from the direct health consequences, extreme weather can threaten human well-being through its impacts on livelihoods and food security.

The environment's impacts on health and well-being will likely become more salient under climate change. Moreover, health systems will bear the brunt as doctors, nurses, and hospitals face increasing demand from patients falling ill due to climate-related problems and confront greater risks of service disruptions. What are the impacts of climate on human health and development? What measures can we adopt to mitigate and manage these impacts? How can we improve the climate resilience of health systems? In this panel, we will discuss some of the latest developments in research on these pressing topics.
