Central Asian Regional Interactions in a Changing Geopolitical Context

Central Asia, historically regarded as one of the “least integrated” regions globally, has seen a significant increase in regional cooperation since the mid-2010s. Both internal regional developments and external geopolitical shifts have played key roles in fostering this growth. This presentation aims to explore the rising frequency of high-level intra-regional interactions within Central Asia. We compiled a primary dataset of interactions among the presidents (P), prime ministers (PM), and foreign ministers (FM) of the five Central Asian states for 2015, 2019, 2022, 2023, and 2024. By analyzing the dataset, the paper demonstrates not only a marked increase in the number of high-level interactions since 2015 but also a substantial expansion in the substance of regional cooperation. However, regional cooperation in Central Asia continues to be predominantly driven by presidents and remains largely bilateral. Despite certain limitations in our dataset, it provides a valuable resource for researchers and opens new avenues for further investigation. We will also discuss some ideas for future research grant applications to expand the scope of this project.
