Master in International Affairs (MIA) - FAQ

We admit 30 to 35 students every year for the MIA programme.

TOEFL or IELTS is mandatory for all applicants except those with Bachelor or Master degrees conducted entirely in English*. TOEFL and IELTS are valid for two years.

The minimum scores for MIA admission are as follows:

  • 100 on the TOEFL internet-based test
  • 7.0 on the IELTS academic test

Applicants who have taken the GRE or GMAT are encouraged to submit their scores in lieu of TOEFL or IELTS score. GRE and GMAT are valid for five years.

Please note that a copy of your score report (to be uploaded as a supporting document) is sufficient for the review of your application.

You should also arrange for the test centre to send the official test result to the school.

*Applicants with qualifications attained in English-medium institutions in Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, the UK or the US are exempted from providing test score. We prefer applicants with at least 2 years of work experience.

We expect most applicants to have an academic background in the Social Sciences. However, candidates from other disciplines and with deep interest in International Affairs are welcome to submit their applications.

Admission decisions will be made primarily based on the application and supporting documents submitted by applicants. However, some applicants may be required to attend an interview.

Deferment of starting date is subject to approval from the school. If it is approved, it will be valid for one year.

Master in Public Policy (MPP) - FAQ

The MPP programme is taken over 2 years (4 semesters) and it requires 64 Units for graduation. The programme is offered on a full time basis, which means that part-time option is not available.

The classes commence in early August. However, you are required to be on campus for the orientation around end of July.

An internship is not compulsory. However, students can choose to take up an internship after their second semester.

There are no firm prerequisites. However, the admissions committee looks for the candidate’s ability to undertake quantitative coursework. Therefore, students are strongly encouraged to have some background in economics and mathematics, although this is not compulsory.

There are approximately 60-80 students in each MPP cohort every year. Including the MPP Juniors (1st year) and MPP Seniors (2nd year,) there are between 120-180 students. Of these, almost 80% are international — representing over 25 countries.

Yes, MPP students can qualify to pursue a second degree with partner institutions including Columbia SIPA, LSE and University of Tokyo . To qualify, MPP students must:

  • Obtain a minimum GPA of 4.0 in the first semester of the programme at LKY School
  • Satisfy the admissions requirements of the partner university
  • Receive a final admission offer

Admission to a double degree programme is competitive. Additionally, MPP students have the option of pursuing a double degree at NUS Business School (MPP-MBA) or NUS Law School (MPP-LLM). Please note that minimum requirements do not imply automatic acceptance into the Double Degree Programme.

MPP students can also benefit from semester exchange in the second year. We have approximately 18 exchange partners, including Tsinghua University, China; University of Tokyo, Japan, Seoul National University, South Korea; Hertie School of Governance, Germany; and Georgetown University, United States to name a few. Qualified MPP students apply for the double degree or semester exchange in the second semester of their first year. A briefing will be conducted during the first semester of their first year.

The MPP programme requires you to take the following courses:

The MPP programme offers the following specialisations:

Yes. MPP Students may register for a maximum of 3 elective courses offered in other postgraduate programmes, such as Business Administration, Economics, Political Science and Southeast Asian Studies. However, these electives must be of level 5000 and they are subjected to approval from the school.

The 2-year MPP programme is targeted at young professionals with up to 5 years of work experience. The curriculum is designed to provide the next generation of practitioners and analysts a rigorous programme to develop a strong foundation in policy analysis, programme evaluation and management. There is a strong focus on quantitative methods.

The 1-year MPA programme is catered for mid-career managers/officers with 5-15 years of work experience. It is more transitional and suitable for students pivoting into areas of higher management and leadership. It provides an intensive, interdisciplinary understanding training to students preparing to address increasingly complex international and global challenges and governance.

Although the two programmes of MPP and MPA take a global perspective on challenges facing the world, they are distinctive in their approach and focus.

It is recommended to have at least two years of full-time work experience before applying for the programme.

Yes. Applicants are treated as new applicants in every admission period. Previous application results will not affect your new application.

No, but the average age of MPP students is 26 years (age range is 20-32 years old).

Yes, MPP programme is open to all applicants who are interested in public policy, but some background in international relations, governance, economics or mathematics is an important advantage.

As a self-financing candidate, the estimated monthly living cost for students living in Singapore would be from S$2,020 to S$2,725. Our College Green accommodation is available and located close to the school. Each housing unit at College Green has 4 bedrooms, so four students will share one housing unit, each with his/her own bedroom.

Yes, you may but you would have to provide housing and all living expenses for your immediate family. However, College Green is only for students. You may contact NUS Office of Housing Services directly for information about bigger housing for rent for married couples and children.

Upon admission to the school, you will get a study visa which allows you to work for 16 hours per week. If your spouse accompanies you, he/she could apply for on a long-term social visit pass. If you want your spouse to work here while you are studying, he/she would need to get their social visit pass first to find work in Singapore, and then convert it to a working visa. No, students at the MPP have to be admitted through the regular admission process and join the programme in the first year. Only students from one of our dual degree partner programmes admitted through the dual degree admission process can join in the second year directly and transfer their units from their first year.

Some MPP students have pursued PhDs after their degree, either at the LKY School or elsewhere. The MPP, however, is a professional degree and aims to train students for professional positions rather than academic careers. There is no guarantee of a place in the LKY School PhD programme after you graduate from the MPP programme.

The MPA programme requires 40 Units for graduation which can be taken over 2 regular semesters and a Special Term, if necessary.

The programme is only offered on a full-time basis which means that part-time option is not available.

There is also a choice of six electives from the following specialisation areas:

MPA students may register for a maximum of two cross-faculty courses offered in other graduate programmes within the NUS, such as Business Administration, Economics, Political Science and Southeast Asian Studies. These cross-faculty courses must be at Level 5 (Master’s level) in order to be counted towards the MPA degree.

PHD in Public Policy - FAQ

Programme Information

No, it is only conducted on-campus.

No, PhD is not offered on a part-time basis.

The maximum candidature is 5 years. However, the scholarship award period is for a maximum of 4 years.

Standardised Test Scores

GRE is optional submission for PhD application effective AY 2025. However, do note that evidence of strong quantitative, verbal, and analytical skills through GRE scores, as well as indicators of research skills and experience will significantly strengthen your application.

There is no minimum, but selection is competitive and GREs are an important component of how different applicants are compared.

Candidates are strongly encouraged to submit GRE scores. If you do not submit GRE scores and your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree was not fully conducted in English*, you must provide a valid TOEFL or IELTS score.

While the Admissions Committee does not have strict minimum score requirements, successful applicants typically achieve or exceed the following scores:

• TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Home Edition: Overall score of 100, with a minimum Writing subscore of 27.
• IELTS Academic Test: Overall score of 7.0, with a minimum Writing subscore of 7.0.

Yes, but this will not increase your chances of attaining a scholarship. The Scholarship Committee will consider your application for all applicable financial aid, if you indicate in your application that you are applying for financial assistance through LKYSPP.

You can apply for financial assistance from the various foundations and international agencies in your country. LKYSPP would be pleased to confirm your PhD application status if requested.

There is no age limit. Financial aid is offered on a competitive basis.

Outcome of Application

The final outcome of the applications for the PhD programme will be announced around May.

Only shortlisted candidates will be notified for the interview. All shortlisted applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application in writing, via e-mail and post. Priority will be given to those who are offered admission.

MPAM (高级公共行政与管理硕士)

申请MPAM 项目需满足如下三点基本条件:

2024年的学费为44,950 新加坡元,大学每年或会对学费进行调涨,请以当年入学前收费通知为准。

该硕士课程可选择全日制和非全日制两种形式。全日制学生可在10个半月内、非全日制学生可在2-3年内,修读完全部10门课程。

非全日制学生上课时间也是与全日制学生一起,在工作日白天,但是非全日制学生每学期只修2门课,即每周只需要占用2 个半天或1个整天的工作日时间。适合工作时间比较灵活但又需要兼顾工作的申请人。,

请注意只有持新加坡工作签证(有效期超过2年)、新加坡永久居民、新加坡公民才可以申请非全日制入读。

 

 

毕业生从该项目毕业后,将会获颁新加坡国立大学的硕士学位证书,此证书被广泛认可。在中国教育部境外学位学历认证 中心也可进行认证。相关详情请跟中国教育部下属认证机构咨询。

MPAM项目为授课型硕士学位课程,没有毕业论文的要求,学员须修完十门课程获得相应学分。具体课程请参见MPAM 项目的 课程列表

是的,所有课程均为中文授课。 如果MPAM学员想要选修英文授课的课程需满足如下其一条件:a)在每年11月15日前提供有效的雅思(最低7.0)或者托福(最低100)成绩;b)本身母语是英语或者之前的学历教育是纯英文教育。英文水平达标者,可以选修来年1月开课的李光耀公共政策学院的英文授课课程,选修科目不超过2门。

该课程为期10个半月,每年8月开学,来年6月结业。在此期间修读完所有课程并获得相应学分即可毕业。 学年历请点 这里

该硕士课程仅在新加坡国立大学面授,不提供任何形式的网络授课或远程授课。所有被录取学生无论全日制或非全日制学生均需要本人到新加坡国立大学参加面对面的课程。

被录取学员可以通过大学官网了解各类学生宿舍详情和收费情况,并按需申请。是否能申请成功要看当年的具体申请情况。

如果选择申请学生宿舍College Green,该宿舍租金每月约1200新元(不包含网络、水电杂费,详细费用以当年国大宿舍费用明细为准)。
