The special issue of Contemporary Southeast Asia , titled “Revisiting Economic Security in Southeast Asia”, co-edited by CAG Senior Research Fellow Denis Hew and Dr Su-Hyun Lee (RSIS), has just been published!
This collection brings together a range of contributions examining how evolving geopolitical and geoeconomic dynamics are have changed the economic security landscape in Southeast Asia. While ASEAN’s approach has long been anchored in openness and interdependence, these foundations are increasingly being tested by great power rivalry, supply chain disruptions, and broader structural shifts in the global economy.
The issue explores how economic security has evolved and what it means for the region today, highlighting the growing importance of resilience, risk management, and the wider societal dimensions of security in an increasingly uncertain environment. It also features a contribution by CAG Research Fellow Dr Barbora Valockova and Research Assistant Mae Chow, titled “ASEAN’s Evolving Economic Security Mechanisms Through the Lens of Historical Institutionalism.”
We would like to thank all the authors, editors, discussants, and participants for their contributions, as well as those who supported the two workshops at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and RSIS, leading up to the launch of this special issue.
