My summer internship at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in their Manila headquarters was an incredibly positive and enriching experience. From June to August, I had the privilege of working in the Gender Equality Thematic Group within the Sustainable Development and Climate Change Department, where my primary area of focus was gender bonds. This opportunity not only broadened my horizons but also deepened my understanding of the critical role innovative financial instruments such as gender bonds play in advancing gender equality initiatives in the Asia-Pacific region.
The core of my internship revolved around conducting comprehensive research on gender bonds. This project allowed me to delve into the intersection of finance and gender equality, a topic that I am deeply passionate about. As part of my research, I examined the regulations and guidelines, issuances, and impact of gender bonds, seeking to identify best practices and areas of improvement. Through a series of rigorous analysis of financial data, interviews with stakeholders, and a deep dive into country-specific case studies, I gained a holistic understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with these financial instruments. I subsequently shared my findings with the team through a presentation and a policy brief.
I was fortunate to have Mrs. Keiko Nowacka as my supervisor for this project. Mrs. Nowacka not only provided valuable guidance and feedback but also gave me complete accountability and freedom to shape the project according to my vision. Her trust in my abilities was a great motivator, and it pushed me to excel in my research. Under her mentorship, I felt like a valued member of the team, and this level of trust and support was truly empowering.
Additionally, working at the ADB’s Manila headquarters was an unforgettable experience. The vibrant atmosphere of the office and the diverse pool of talent from various backgrounds created a dynamic work environment. It was inspiring to collaborate with professionals who shared my passion for sustainable development and gender equality. The exchange of ideas and experiences with my colleagues was both intellectually stimulating and personally fulfilling.
Beyond the professional aspects of my internship, I also had the opportunity to bond with fellow interns. We not only shared our work experiences but cultural backgrounds and personal stories. Weekends were often dedicated to exploring the Philippines’ rich culture and beautiful landscapes. These adventures broadened my horizons and allowed me to build lasting friendships with some of the best people from around the world.
Looking back on my internship at the Asian Development Bank, I can confidently say that it was a transformative experience that reaffirmed my commitment to work towards a more equitable and sustainable future. It not only provided me with valuable insights into the world of international development, finance, and gender equality, but also inspired me to continue working towards gender equality in my future endeavors.
