Boost for mid-career workers much needed

Institute of Policy Studies senior research fellow Faizal Yahya said technological disruption for economic transformation is moving at a quicker pace in Singapore than in the rest of the region because of national-level digitalisation programmes under the Industry Transformation Maps and Industry Digital Plans.

Also, compared with the region, Singapore's higher labour costs suggest older workers and PMETs (professionals, managers, executives and technicians) are more likely to be replaced by automation and entry-level workers, he said.

Dr Faizal noted that the feasibility of reskilling mature workers at a mass scale is largely about changing mindsets to continuing education and training.

"For mature workers, this involves being open to cycles of retraining. For employers, especially recruitment executives, it involves moving away from ageist stereotypes and practices," he said. Employers should also be transparent about available job opportunities, so that workers do not find training meaningless, he added.
