In early April, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its third and final report assessing the state of knowledge on solutions for mitigating climate change. The report followed two earlier documents on the science of climate change and its impacts. The punchline of the report was stark: unless deep and immediate cuts are made, limiting warming to 1.5 degrees C is out of reach. But the report also recommended a pragmatic view forward: many solutions exist across multiple sectors; many of them are compatible with achieving the sustainable development goals; and growing numbers of laws and policies across the world are seeking to implement these solutions. The IPCC is intended to provide policy-relevant but not policy-prescriptive information to governments. The next step is for governments of the world to examine the report and use the findings to re-visit national policies and governance frameworks.
