Love it or hate it, the prickly-husked durian, with its pungent smell and creamy flesh, has become a staple in Singapore’s food scene. The specialty fruit was the centrepiece of a recent themed gathering, organised by the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy’s Singapore Alumni Chapter.
On 6 August, 23 LKY School alumni, together with the School’s Vice Dean of Academic Affairs Kenneth Paul Tan, gathered for the alumni chapter’s first ever durian party. Held at Deluxe Trading, a durian stall in Singapore’s Geylang district, the alumni sampled a variety of Singapore’s best-loved durian, and other tropical fruits including rambutan and coconut.
Mr Bernard Oh (MPP 2011), President of the Singapore Alumni Chapter, said the event was a good platform for alumni members to catch up with one another. He remarked, “There was a mix of MPP and MPA alumni from Singapore and overseas, interacting with one another and learning about the differences between the different types of durian.”
