Mobile Activism: From Swarms to Political Change

Based on the author’s ongoing book series on mobile media, this seminar presentation will address how mobile phones are being harnessed for the ‘mobilisation’ of crowds for activities ranging from disaster relief and citizen journalism, to elections and public safety. The roles of traditional and new media are continually renegotiated in this space, creating new balances between the freedom of association and expression, the quality of information, security and privacy issues. Regulatory and public interest issues will also be addressed.
