Observations about inequality evoke deep-seated anger at social injustice and unfairness. But what are historically-accurate movements in inequality? What social and policy challenges do they actually raise? This lecture argues that both social commentary and conventional policy proposals have failed to be commensurate with historical dynamics in inequality. Certainly, deep problems persist in the world, but inequality is no sufficient statistic for understanding either social discontent or the real challenges that societies face.
