IPS-NGS-SAM Spotlight on Cultural Policy Series Ten: Roundtable on Art in the Time of Pandemic: Meaning, Relevance and Future

The COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing lockdown of Singapore and other countries have raised deep questions about the place of art in a newly configured world. With social distancing of varying degrees in place for the immediate future and perhaps for longer, has the meaning and relevance of the arts changed, and in what way? Does the answer differ for each art form? What should artists do to embrace, resist or adapt to the consequences of this crisis in terms of policy, their practice and their sustainability? What can we learn from the crises of the past, and what does the present one bode for the future of the arts?

This roundtable brings together leading artists to reflect on these challenging issues.

ABOUT THE IPS-NGS-SAM SPOTLIGHT ON CULTURAL POLICY SERIES

The IPS-NGS-SAM Spotlight on Cultural Policy Series is a space for frank, robust and collegial discussion of the issues and challenges related to arts and cultural policy in Singapore. This is the first roundtable with the NGS joining IPS and SAM as collaborators. Each roundtable gathers members of the arts and creative community, policymakers, academics and other stakeholders working across different fields, to discuss a specific, timely topic about the arts and cultural policy landscape in Singapore. The goal is to assess current policies and offer recommendations for the future. SAM was the venue sponsor for the 2015–2018 series.

This series is convened by IPS researcher, Mr Tan Tarn How.
