Home is Where We Are by Wang Gungwu

Home is Where we Are Cvr

Does home have to be a country or a city?... Or is home this house or that? We have been fortunate.... We seemed always to have been home.

Wang Gungwu, award-winning historian and author, has held positions in universities around the world, from London and Cambridge to Kuala Lumpur, Canberra, Hong Kong and Singapore. This second volume of his memoirs, written with his late wife Margaret Wang, continues the very personal story begun in Home is Not Here (NUS Press, 2018). His account of his university education in Singapore and the UK, and the early years of his career as an academic in Malaysia capture the excitement, the ambition and the choices of a generation that saw it their responsibility to build the new nations of Southeast Asia. We also see these years from Margaret’s perspective, her own fascinating family story, and her early impressions of this Gungwu, then a young bearded poet. Wise and moving, this is a fascinating reflection on identity and belonging, and on the ability of the individual to find a place amidst the historical currents that have shaped Asia.

NUS Press and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy are happy to invite you to the virtual launch of Wang Gungwu’s Home is Where We Are. Please join us to wish Prof Wang Gungwu a happy 90th birthday; and to hear from special guests sharing their memories of the University of Malaya and Prof Wang's contributions over the years.
