Hacker Culture: The Changing Behavioural and Ideational Foundations of Cyber Conflict

This talk presents a framework for understanding ‘hacker culture’ – broadly defined as the behaviour, ideas and beliefs of hackers. The presentation starts by exploring existing literature on hacker culture, and documents how various subcultures of cyber conflict have emerged both within states and transnationally in the post-Cold War era. The presentation identifies the ideas and practices that galvanise hackers and which provide justification for their actions.
