COVID-19: Lessons, Consequences on Global Climate, Biodiversity Crises and Health

As the United Nations and governments devote sustained attention to manage the COVID-19 pandemic, scholars and practitioners have begun to consider the impact on the global environmental challenges of our times: the climate and biodiversity crises. The dramatic decline of economic activity, while profoundly disruptive, has led to substantial reduction in demand for fossil fuels and consequent reductions in air and water pollution. Domestic and global leaders have the chance to manage the economic recovery in an environmentally-sustainable direction.

• What “lessons learned” should be applied to global environmental governance reforms?

• How might COVID-19 management enable governments to meet their Paris Accord targets?

• Conversely, what lessons from the biodiversity and climate crises can be applied to COVID-19 management?

• What are the impacts on global public health in terms of future risk and resiliency?

The purpose of this Asia Thinker Series webinar is to generate a conversation about the linkages between COVID-19, biodiversity and climate. We focus especially on the implications of these global challenges for governance in Asia – a question that has generated regional and global attention.
