To celebrate the 60th Birth Anniversary of the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, the year 2015 was marked as the “National Reading Year” in Bhutan. In joining the nation to celebrate the wonderful year, the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKY School) Bhutan Alumni Chapter organised a Book Giving Initiative to remote primary schools in Bhutan.
The Chapter selected five remote primary schools from Mongar and Zhemgang Dzongkhags (Districts) for the initiative. They were Saling Communty Primary School and Pangthang Primary School in Mongar Dzongkhag, and Thrisa Primary School, Dunmang Primary School and Tradijong Primary School in Zhemgang Dzongkhang. The schools were selected based on their remoteness and the total number of students in each school to derive maximum benefits from this simple gesture.

Each of the five schools was provided with a package of library books (the recommended list was obtained from the Ministry of Education). The package also included other teaching aids such as pencils, erasers, sharpeners, colour pens and educational charts and games. The Bhutan Alumni Chapter handed over the packages to the Director General, Department of School Education under the Ministry of Education.

The Book Giving Initiative would not have been possible without the encouragement and support from the LKY School Alumni Relations Team and the Bhutanese alumni. The present office bearers of the Bhutan Alumni Chapter would like to thank the LKY School, the Ministry of Education of Bhutan, and the members of Bhutan Alumni Chapter for all the support rendered towards making the initiative a successful one. The Chapter plans to make the book donation drive an annual event of the Bhutan Alumni Chapter.
