Asia Thinker Series – “Food Technologies: Necessary, Unique or Challenging?”

Global food security was a rising concern even before COVID-19 hit and since the pandemic, this has exacerbated. According to the United Nations’ State of Food Security and Nutrition report (2020), an estimated 690 million people, that’s 1 in 9 go hungry, and 3 billion cannot afford a healthy diet. This gap widens as the world population grows; estimating to exceed 9 billion by 2030.

Food technologies, however, may just hold the potential answer to this concern.

But first, policymakers will have to architect a viable ecosystem that can help such policy initiatives to thrive and effectively meet country needs. So how will governments shape the piloting of food technologies? Especially against other nascent demands like economic recovery and climate change risks. What might the major factors in food technology successes be over the long-term of sustainability and what are the contributors that make a comprehensive and strong working framework?

As countries inch forward on an endemic COVID phase, will food technologies prove to be challenging or promising? Our experts discuss the way forward.
