With the Covid-19 pandemic passing through, the
China International Big Data Industry Expo is once again being organized in person in beautiful Guizhou. The event took place from 26th to 28th May 2023. This event brought together professionals and industry players in Big Data, AI, and related disciplines.
Professor Paul Cheung was honored to be invited again to speak at the Expo's Forum on Big Data, Analytics, and Official Statistics. He spoke on the evolving Public Data Agenda and the complicated task of managing a diverse and chaotic data ecosystem. Using United Nations' UNData as an example, Prof Cheung shared his experience of bringing UN data resources from multiple UN agencies onto a single platform for easy access by the global community. Heused Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore as examples to illustrate effective ecosystem management strategies such as Data Custodians and the Single Source of Truth. Governments around the world are developing their own strategies for data governance. China, for example, has just established a National Data Bureau. Not many details have been released about the functions of this Bureau. It would be beneficial if there are opportunities for countries to share their experiences and learning points.
