IPS recently launched The Idea of Singapore: Smallness Unconstrained by 6th S R Nathan Fellow Professor Tan Tai Yong. This edited collection of his IPS-Nathan Lectures, delivered between September 2018 and May 2019, includes highlights of his dialogue with the audience. Minister for Social and Family Development and Second Minister for National Development, Mr Desmond Lee, was the Guest of Honour for the launch.

The book takes audiences through enduring themes in Singapore’s past — geography, regional networks and globalisation — and charts Singapore’s historical evolution. It is now available online and in selected bookstores. Watch the launch, featuring remarks by Prof Tan, Minister Lee and IPS Director Janadas Devan here.

Studies have shown that from as early as pre-school, children display cognitive awareness of racial differences and are capable of displaying prejudice. Children make associations (positive or negative) based on cues they pick up from peers and trusted adults. As such, parents should do their part to shed their prejudice and lead by example to help inculcate cultural literacy.

This report examines the views of the local population on the implications of mismanaging five key issues: race, religion, class, immigration, and LGBT. The researchers found that the majority of Singaporeans are cognizant of the gravity of managing our societal faultlines. The report also looks at the desired level of state involvement and public discourse in addressing faultlines; and community attitudes towards and management of faultlines.

Industry 4.0 is more than just about digitalisation, automation and technology; we also need to consider the role of people in Industry 4.0. This report examines how Singapore stakeholders introduce technological and organisational changes into working environments, the accompanying changes in education, and what more stakeholders can do to develop Industry 4.0, while maintaining a human-centric approach.

Report — Singapore Bicentennial Conference 

The Conference examined Singapore’s 700-year history and the evolution of governance in a successful post-colonial state, and included a special dialogue with Deputy Prime Minister Mr Heng Swee Keat. Themes from the Conference included Singapore’s historical connections and separations, historical dynamism and diversity in Southeast Asia, and the challenges for present-day Singapore amidst global uncertainty.
