Some Singaporeans may well raise the difficulties they have had to go through to get better jobs, such as a gruelling education system, and national service for males, says Dr Mathews. "There is then a perception that having put in all this effort, the nation should not unfairly undermine this by allowing easy access to foreigners who have not made such sacrifices."
