Conventional urban planning frameworks often prioritise quantifiable benchmarks defining our built environment. While these aspects are essential, they overlook the more intangible elements that contribute to well-being, such as cultural heritage, diversity and inclusion, and a sense of community and neighbourliness.
Stemming from research and design exploration for the Paya Lebar Air Base Conceptual Master Plan, the book Well-being for All: A Holistic Framework for Tropical Cities (Pagesetters, 2023) proposes an innovative future city planning framework that supports well-being in Singapore’s tropical context. Guided by 12 principles of well-being, the book provides a set of tools that analyse and evaluate well-being in the built environment. Through scales of interventions, the toolkit provides strategies that address physical, social, economic and environmental objectives in a holistic manner.
Join the Lead Researcher of this project, Yann Follain, who is also the Managing Director and Head of Design of WY-TO Group, a multidisciplinary built environment design practice, alongside panellists representing the realms of Planet, People and Prosperity, as they discuss the genesis and research process behind the book; the intersections between architecture, urban planning and public policy; the tangible and intangible features of our living spaces that contribute to well-being; and what a future city that prioritises well-being for all may look like.
