Panel Discussion

Editor’s Panel Session

Within the framework of Spotlight 2019, the Institute of Water Policy is organizing an Editor’s panel session with editors and members of editorial boards of leading water and environment journals.

The objectives of the session are to discuss the goals of several water and environment journals, how effective they have been in disseminating knowledge, influencing policies, framing public discussions, and having societal impacts. Additionally, if there are plans to change them in the future to make them more relevant from the policy, knowledge and societal viewpoints.

The session is organized to stimulate honest dialogue among journal editors and the audience (academics, students and members of the public) to achieve the above objectives.

There are numerous discussions on how science can support policymaking. Over the years, policy makers have collaborated with academics to conduct empirical research on social and environmental issues that would inform relevant policies with broad-sweeping impact. Applied academics have also made important contributions through their research, for policy consideration. Many of these contributions have appeared in scientific journals. Journals thus offer an important conduit for the communication of policy, and socially relevant, research ideas and findings.

Through critical discussions of how scholarly contributions contribute to the fields of policy making, the Editor’s panel session also sets the stage for an enduring community of practice (CoP) among journal editors. A CoP developed through this meeting can enable the continual exchange of critical and meaningful feedback and ideas among editors, to identify emerging scopes of research on water and environment, and advance the depth and quality of discussions on both the topics

An editorial to be published in the International Journal of Water Resources Development will discuss the findings of the session.
