Democracies in Asia-Pacific Region under COVID-19

The general impression is that democracies are not coping with COVID-19 very well. A crisis of faith in democracies emerges according to many polls in different contexts. Nevertheless, measures against COVID-19 in New Zealand, Taiwan, South Korea have been impressive. In April 2020, Forbes COVID-19 Safety Countries Ranking included South Korea, Taiwan, New Zealand in Top-10 best performing regions. In the Covid Resilience Ranking by the Bloomberg published in late 2020, New Zealand, Taiwan, South Korea still ranked high, although the re-emergence of COVID in South Korea has come recently due to the cold weather.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, these democracies have acted quickly and aggressively to deploy massive contact tracing, testing, and isolation measures. After almost a year of fighting COVID-19, experiences in New Zealand, Taiwan, South Korea could shed fresh light on future development in managing COVID-19 around the world.
