Strategy and Statecraft - Implications for Global Stability and Commerce

As the United States recalibrates its relationships across the globe, Indo-Pacific governments and businesses are navigating a complex landscape where economic, fiscal, and military issues are increasingly intertwined. Trade imbalances, tariffs, defence spending and emerging technologies are reshaping alliances and defining future growth.

Against this complex backdrop, The Asia Group – a leading global geopolitical and business consultancy – in partnership with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, the American Chamber of Commerce and the US-ASEAN Business Council, is convening a far-reaching conversation between two of America’s foremost Asia policy and business experts — Dr. Kurt M. Campbell, Chairman of The Asia Group, and Mr. Matt Pottinger, CEO of Garnaut Global. They will be joined by leading Southeast Asian scholar Professor Joseph Liow for an exploration of US foreign policy and its impact on the Asian geopolitical and business operating environment.

Campbell and Pottinger have played pivotal roles crafting American strategy toward Asia. Campbell has worked for and advised four Presidents – including most recently as Deputy Secretary of State. He is widely regarded as a critical architect and thought leader on US-Asia policy. Pottinger served the entire four years of the first Trump Presidency, including as the Principal Deputy National Security Advisor to the President, and is a world renowned China and Asia policy expert.

Liow, Dean of NTU’s College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, contributes a regional perspective on how ASEAN nations are refining their strategies and managing competing pressures.

The conversation will be moderated by Ambassador Chan Heng Chee, one of Singapore’s most distinguished diplomats and a longtime stakeholder of US-Asia relations. Drawing on her extensive experience as Singapore’s former envoy to Washington and the United Nations, Ambassador Chan will guide a wide-ranging dialogue exploring the fault lines, risks, and strategic choices shaping this pivotal moment — and what it signals for the future of the Indo-Pacific.
