SAHR is a peer-led non-profit organization working to resource women and diverse leaders – especially those who are underrepresented – to shape and implement laws, policies and practices to end Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).

We live in a world where Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) remains the most pressing violation of all time – yet laws and policies to address this remain ineffective. If we want more equal and accessible justice systems, we need to invest in the next generation of women and underrepresented civil society leaders to serve decision-making processes, and, collaborate with their governments, to uphold justice.

What SAHR does

SAHR Gender Justice Accelerator Program

SAHR is piloting an Accelerator & Fellowship Program, the first accompaniment program which exists, to prepare lawyers and civil society leaders with the skills and tools to meaningfully participate in SGBV law and policy-making and implementation, in complex and challenging contexts.

Advocacy

SAHR submits thematic reports to UN Treaty Bodies and other UN Mechanisms to monitor and enforce international human standards to improve access to justice for survivors of SGBV.

Capacity Building

SAHR runs virtual and in-person trainings for civil society on:

  • International legal standards on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV)
  • Documentation of SGBV Cases for Justice and Advocacy
  • Policy design and formulation to prevent, punish and remedy SGBV.

Awareness

SAHR runs virtual events and video podcasts to raise awareness of the situation of SGBV in different parts of the world and how SGBV manifests intersectionally in ways which affect some marginalised groups differently from others. During these sessions, we amplify the work of civil society leaders who are advocating for transformative change through strategic and innovative ways.

Legal Interns and Case Workers support us in 4 key areas:

a) Legal/ Policy Program Management

  • Assist SAHR Gender Justice Fellows with their legal and policy projects to end Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) by providing assistance in documentation of SGBV cases and issues, analysing the cases and issues using international law, drafting research reports and/or law and policy proposals on key issues.
  • Contribute to thematic reports to respond to calls for inputs by United Nations agencies and Mechanisms such as the United Nations Special Rapporteur Procedures.
  • Draft thought leadership articles on thematic issues particularly around SGBV for SAHR’s website.

b) Workshop Management

  • Organize a series of “Justice Labs” to facilitate co-sharing and exchange between civil society leaders and lawyers globally on strategies for the documentation of human rights violations and advocacy. This entails: developing the agenda, communication materials, guest list, and, preparing the respective participants with their talking points.

c) Case Management

  • On a case by case basis, document cases of Survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Survivors for advocacy or preparation of application for safety funding.
