Sangyong Son is an Assistant Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from New York University.
His research sits at the intersection of international security and political violence, with a focus on the dynamics of war, nuclear politics, the legacies of violence, and post-conflict peacebuilding. His work examines two broad questions: (a) how exposure to violence transforms individuals, societies, and states, and (b) what policy interventions can foster peace and cooperation in post-conflict settings.
To answer these questions, Prof. Son combines surveys, lab and field experiments, and causal inference with extensive field research involving human subjects. His research has examined atomic bomb survivors and their descendants, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, North Korean defectors, Agent Orange survivors, and victims of the Gwangju Uprising.
His work has been published in the Journal of Conflict Resolution, Comparative Political Studies, Asian Survey, and The Nonproliferation Review.
