Dr. Daniel Overbeck is an economist with research interests at the intersection of public economics and development economics. His agenda focuses on understanding how public policies in developing countries are shaped by institutional contexts peculiar to lower-income environments. He investigate this question from different perspectives, mainly focusing on questions related to the taxation of firms as well as industrial and environmental policy. To this end, he combines economic theory and state-of-the-art empirical methods applied to large administrative data sets. Parts of his PhD thesis were published in the Journal of Public Economics.
Currently, he collaborates with revenue authorities in Zambia, Rwanda and South Africa and analyses tax data to evaluate and inform policies such as tax reforms and road construction programs. His work has been featured in multiple policy outlets. His research activities have been partly funded by organisations such as the United Nations University and the International Growth Centre.
Dr. Overbeck grew up close to Frankfurt, Germany. He received his PhD in Economics from the University of Mannheim in 2025. Additionally, he holds a BSc and Msc in Economics from the universities of Heidelberg and Bonn, respectively.
