Nature-based solutions (NbS) are increasingly recognised as viable alternatives or complementary additions to purely engineered infrastructure for reducing risks posed by natural hazards, and in particular, hydro-meteorological hazards such as floods, droughts or storm surges. In this webinar, I will use examples from two projects, OPRANDUM and the Living Deltas Hub to illustrate how NbS are perceived by a range of stakeholders, how they can contribute to reduce all the components of risks (such as exposure and vulnerability), and how they can contribute to protecting coastlines when the biophysical and socio-economic circumstances of an area are adequate. I will also discuss recent advances that were made to characterize what NbS are and are not, and how we can assess their performance in terms of risk reduction, but also in terms of providing multiple co-benefits.
