COVID-19 has brought to the forefront the shortcomings of our society, be it the isolation experienced by senior citizens or the inhumane living conditions of migrant worker dormitories. The pandemic has accelerated change and technological innovation to provide solutions to some of these problems, and the importance of technology cannot be denied. However, it is by no means a silver bullet and the need to rethink urban paradigms in a post-COVID world is clear. What are the mindset shifts required in the planning and management of cities as we move into the future? Particularly in the case of Singapore with its limited land area, how can we balance the three aspects of liveability – physical, societal and cultural – without trading one for the other?
