Public Management Research Conference 2018

In an operating environment characterised by vulnerability, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity – a VUCA world – public managers will face a variety of new challenges, including managing diffuse stakeholder networks, authority turbulence and populism, and multi-sector service delivery chains.

These 21st century managerial demands require a combination of classical, recurrent, and new competencies and skills. The academic public management community will shape and have to respond to this dynamic environment with interdisciplinary, comparative, and innovative research that ventures into new avenues and questions.

With this conference, we aim to bring together scholars from developed, developing and transitioning economies to reflect on big ideas in public management and to look at the prospects of the field, with particular focus on the role of public managers and public institutions in a rapidly changing environment.

We welcome panel and paper submissions on a variety of themes including performance management, co-production, collaborative governance, leadership development and strategic HRM, public service delivery, public-private partnerships, capacity building, decentralisation and federalism, values, ethics and accountability, good governance, Eastern and Western models of public administration, and multi-level governance, among others.

Researchers can propose either a panel consisting of 4 papers of no more than 1000 words (including information on contributing authors and papers), or an individual paper proposal of no more than 500 words.

This proposal should introduce the focus or topic of the panel or paper, explain its relevance to the public management community and the broader conference theme, and clearly indicate the main research question, methodology and data analysis techniques, and potential contribution to the field. Theoretical, methodological, or empirical approaches are all welcome.

Proposals can be submitted through the website at between 1 September and 1 November 2017.
