The Anatomy of Choice Alignment Index (AOCAI) offers a data-driven view of how Southeast Asian countries have navigated the U.S.–China rivalry from 1995 to 2024. Conceived by Professors Khong Yuen Foong and Joseph Chinyong Liow of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore, this interactive tool visualises regional alignment trends across five domains – political-diplomatic, military-security, economic, cultural-affinity, and signalling – each measured through four indicators.
Housed within the Centre on Asia and Globalisation’s website, AOCAI forms part of the broader Social Science Research Council-supported project “Anatomy of Choice: Southeast Asia Between the Superpowers.” By mapping shifts in alignments and identifying patterns of hedging and strategic choice, the AOCAI provides scholars, policymakers, and the public with new insights into Southeast Asia’s evolving position between the major powers.
Join us for the launch as we explore the data, design, and diplomacy shaping the region’s geopolitical landscape.
