IPS Closed-Door Discussion on "Demographic trends and prospects and implications for economic development"

Lord Turner believes that the enforced nature of the Chinese one child policy have led economists to understate the importance of the Chinese demographic slowdown to their growth story, and that conversely talk of a “demographic dividend” in India fails to recognise the disadvantages that India still suffers from a rapid population growth with which job creation cannot keep up. Lord Turner will discuss the demographic drivers of economic development (with a focus on key regional economies) such as fertility, longevity and immigration, and the consequent impact on innovation and productivity, labour markets and pension and social support systems.
